Q: How to prevent Altitude Sickness? As Lhasa is about 3600 meters, the oxygen content is only about 70% of the mainland China, it's the main reason for suffering from the Altitude Sickness.

A: 1) If you have never been on the plateau, you’d better do a physical examination before entering Tibet. If you have severe cold, a high fever, chronic pulmonary diseases, severe cardiovascular diseases, you should avoid traveling in Tibet.

 2) In order to prevent altitude sickness, you need to take proper rest and avoid strenuous activities before entering Tibet. When you arrive in Lhasa, you'd better rest as early as you can and don’t take a bath on the first day.

 3) It’s necessary to prevent yourself from having a cold caused by the cold weather. Cold is one of the major causes of acute high-altitude pulmonary edema.

4) You can stay two or three days in Lhasa (about 3600 meters) to adapt to the high altitude and then go outside Lhasa, such as Gyantse, Shigatse, and Namtso.

5) You can carry some medicine such as Nifedipine, Nuodikang Capsules, and Suoluomabao Capsules to prevent altitude sickness. Besides, Diamox is also a medicine which used to stimulate breathing and reduce mild symptoms of mountain sickness.

Q: What's the weather like in Tibet and when is the best time to travel to Tibet?

A: As Tibet is a plateau, it is cold and dry all the year round. The most regions in Tibet experience frost at least 6 months in a year. The weather in the different regions of Tibet is varying widely.

1) Low Season (Dec - Feb)

As roads are all blocked by heavy snow and landslides are frequently occurrences in winter, a few travelers will choose to visit Tibet in winter. The price of the hotel and many entry tickets are discounted by up to 50%, but some restaurants which located in remote regions of Tibet will be closed. Besides, in winter, there are many festive events held, it is the good time to visit Lhasa, Shigatse, and Nyingchi.

2) Tibetan New Year (Feb - Apr)

Since the Tibetan New Year hold every year in February to March, Tibet will be closed for foreign travelers during this time.

3) High Season (Apr - Oct)

The period from April to October is the best time to visit Tibet. Although Tibet is balmy in summer, most rainfall also comes during this season between June and September. July and August are the preferred time to visit Tibet as you can enjoy the warm sunshine, charming landscape, and great festive events, such as Gyantse Horse Race Festival, Ganden Thangka Showing Festival, and Shoton Festival.

A: Due to the high altitude, religious beliefs, and ethnic customs, Tibetan people have unique eating habits. The Tibetan diet consists mainly of meat, milk and other high protein foods which can help them endure cold.
